Superior Singing Method Review – Affordable Singing Course. Is It Good?

12 minutes read

So I assume that if you’re reading the Guitar Songs Masters blog you play guitar, probably as a hobby like me – and you like to play around mostly at home and with friends. Now honestly, we all know that singing can really take our “show” up a notch and make people around us enjoy the time listening to us on a whole new level. > The thing is – most people never really felt the experience of singing well and therefore we mostly lack the confidence to do it.

So today, I want to share my Superior Singing Method review with you, which might help you do that yourself – become a confident singer who sounds great. Read to see if it’s relevant for ya.

Let’s start with the best news that a lot of people don’t really grasp:

Just like you’ve learned how to play guitar well – you can learn how to sing well. Anybody who wants – can do it.

When you internalize it and decide that you set your sights on the goal of learning how to sing, now it’s just a matter of finding the right guide to help you do it.  Now, as someone who tried learning how to sing both with a face to face vocal teacher and with an online course – I will give you my honest thoughts about the pros and cons of both.

Before we start, I want to give you a short reminder of why it can be so beneficial to learn how to sing as a guitarist.

This is me singing Otis Redding on stage in St. Louis, Missouri. I would have never had the courage to do it before this course. Now I do this regularly – as you can see in the video example at the bottom of the post with a Bob Dylan cover I made.
Reminder Before We Start: Some of the Benefits of Singing – Backed by Studies*

♣ Singing is scientifically proven to improve your mood and make you happy and relaxed. *

♣ Singing shows charisma – which is a very attractive trait both as a man or a woman. *

♣ When playing songs for people, singing let you “put on the whole show” and not just the guitar part for example. It makes you 10X more interesting to listen to! (backed by my own research in hundreds of jams  )

♣ Singing well improves your confidence as a musician and as a person. *

♣ Well, bottom line, it’s just a cool, fun and a very sexy skill. So if you love music – why not learning how to sing it too?

Face To Face Singing Lessons vs. Online Singing Lessons – My Personal Experience

Let’s begin.

In 2014 I worked for a few months in New Orleans – one of the world’s biggest music capitals. I decided that after years of playing music, it was a great opportunity to learn how to sing too. I was previously occasionally watching a couple of YouTube lessons about singing, but those never really make you stick to it, because they lack any kind of a systematic approach or a real way to keep up with them. It’s just a random pool of lessons.

Anyway, I started taking singing lessons with a well-known local teacher.

These were weekly vocal lessons that each cost me 50$ and lasted for 45 minutes. The first third of each lesson was about doing warm up exercises with the teacher playing the piano, and then working on other stuff the teacher offered, getting tips from her, and my favorite – working on songs that I personally like.

Bottom line: It was nice and I did saw some improvement, but after a couple of months and hundreds of dollars that were gone, I did not feel I was getting enough of the improvement that I was looking for, and it was too much money anyways from what I was willing to spend at the time, so I decided to look for other methods. I turned online and researched the different singing courses that are available.

Then – that’s what caught my eyes.
Who’s the Teacher Behind Superior Singing Method?

Lucky us in the 21st century – we can learn just about anything online – and for most of the stuff, you can easily find world-class teachers – for less than the price of the local teacher next door.

Aaron Anastasi is the founder of Superior Singing Method. He’s a famous vocal coach (and an actor actually, IMDB) from Los Angeles, California. He has a successful YouTube channel with currently over 200,000 subscribers.

Anyway, after researching about him and the course I understood that this guy knows what he’s talking about and decided to get the course.

What I think about the teacher: I like Aaron’s style since he speaks very coherently and gets his message across in a nice way and without blabbering. If you like watching YouTube lessons so you know this isn’t something trivial. You can check him out in his YouTube channel and judge for yourself. I still follow his channel even though I finished the main singing course two years ago since he regularly uploads good stuff and singing tips.

What Superior Singing Method Promises to Deliver in 8 Weeks of Training for 10-15 Minutes a Day:

These are some of the promises. In the next headline, I’ll describe a bit more deeply what each of them means and how it’s achieved.

  1. Develop a much more accurate pitch.
  2. Better vocal control.
  3. Improve your vocal tone.
  4. Improve your vocal power and “projection” of your voice.
  5. Develop a precise vocal agility – the ability to jump precisely from notes to notes, including from high to low notes.
  6. Learn advanced singing techniques that pros use for smoother, easier singing.

For me, it did sound like a great deal and like a place where I will want to be 8 weeks later. Especially after spending about the same amount of weeks in face-to-face lessons that were not showing prominent results. So I went for it.

How is the Course Built?
  • 8 Weeks of training, where every week is dedicated to 7 lessons on a different singing topic. For example, Week 3 – improving your vocal tone.
  • Short and to the point videos that you watch every day and teach you a new tip or a concept. Each video is on average 5 minutes long.
  • After each daily lesson, there is a vocal exercise that you sing along to, so it gets practical and not just something you watch. The exercise is also about 6-8 minutes long.
  • Also, you get a full, detailed ebook that is sort of a “Singing for Dummies” 101 guide for beginners. It’s not a must-read, but if you also like reading and not just videos then you’ll probably like it like I did, since it helps to ingrain the rest of the knowledge that the videos talk about.

What I think about it: I really liked the structure of the course. It is very easy to follow and understand, it shows you a “course progress” bar, and every week I gradually felt how I was constantly improving and my favorite songs that I like to sing while playing guitar (from The Beatles to Bob Dylan to Coldplay, Rock, Pop, some Jazz) just began to sound much better. I also felt how I could sing for a longer time without feeling “worn out” on the inside of my throat, thanks to the good techniques and habits I learned.

As someone who learned a lot about effective course structuring and created an online course myself, (the Harmonica Jamz course for learning harmonica) I can confidently tell that Aaron knows the psychology of learning and of creating an effective learning process for his students.

The member’s area is built in a very professional way that flows naturally between the lessons as you make progress in the course.

Week 1: Unique Vocal Warm Up Exercises – getting ready to start advanced singing.

Week 2: Breath Management and Diaphragm Breathing – techniques for controlling your breathing while singing

Week 3: Mastering Vocal Tone – different ways to improve the tone quality (“timbre” is the professional term) of your voice

Week 4: Improving Pitch – how to always sing on pitch and to avoid the embarrassing off-key mishaps

Week 5: Resonance and Singing With Power – how to strengthen your voice resonance while maintaining a high-quality tone

Week 6: The Mix Voice and Singing Higher Notes – how to sing higher notes without over straining your vocal cords

Week 7: Improving Vocal Agility – the ability to jump precisely from notes to notes, including from high to low notes

Week 8: Advanced Strengthening and Vocal Techniques – developing the vibrato technique and sharpening your overall singing assets

The Superior Singing Method Review – Pros & Cons

Pros

So let’s get to the bottom line. Here’s what I liked about the course:

+ I felt constant improvement starting from around week 2, and I just kept getting better. I am now proud to sing my favorite songs in front of people – which is something I never even dreamed about a few years ago.

+ It’s a very high-quality course from a world-class vocal teacher with a large YouTube following. Trustworthiness you just can’t get when taking lessons in the neighborhood.

+ It’s affordable! At 99$, for the price of just two lessons with my face-to-face New Orleans vocal coach – I got 8 weeks full of daily lessons and exercises that have proven to make me improve way faster.

+ The structure of the course is easy to follow and will motivate you to improve and to keep going. The members area is built in a professional level as well.

+ You can watch the course from your tablet or mobile as well.

+ It’s very time-efficient. You don’t have to drive somewhere for a lesson. You don’t have to wait for it to come in the mail since it’s accessible instantly from everywhere. The lessons are short and to the point. About 15 minutes a day and you’re done – and that’s really all you need in order to see massive improvement as long as you’re consistent. (of course that if after the warm ups you’ll also sing a couple of songs so it will make it even more practical for you and you’ll improve even faster.

+ The course comes with a large PDF e-book that summarizes all the points and tips from the course, something which I found helpful to refer back to even long after I finished the course.

+ They offer a bunch of follow up courses to take your singing even farther – I took the one called “Superior Harmony” where I improved my ability to sing along with other people, recognize different musical intervals that sound best when singing together, etc.

+ There’s a 60-days full money back guarantee in case you don’t dig it.

There’s no denying that singing – either for a man or a woman, is a very sexy skill to have  (I took this photo in Nashville)
Cons

– Even though the lessons are very affordable compared to face-to-face lessons and compared to other online singing programs, 99$ is still a large amount of money, so think for yourself if you are really into singing, and if you’re willing to practice.

– Learning with a private teacher who can actually see your mistakes and correct them is the best way to learn if you intend to become a pro. No way around it. However, the disadvantage is that the pricing, even for just a series of the first basic lessons, will be hundreds of dollars. So do your math. I think that an online course is always a great way to at least “test the waters”. Later – if you like it and you want to take it farther – I’d definitely recommend a personal teacher.

– Not really a con – but the course demands dedication every day (or close to every day) for two months. It’s not a “magic bullet” that you buy and become good automatically – you gotta put in the work to see results. 10-15 minutes a day is not much and it’s extra time that everyone has, but again – make sure that you really want it and willing to put in the efforts, or else you won’t get anything out of it.

The Superior Singing Method Review – VERDICT

I finished the Superior Singing Method course three years ago, in early 2015, and it was really the kickstart to my singing. It did not only promise, but also delivered a tremendous improvement in my singing and made me confident, for the first time in my life, to sing in front of other people when I play music. I wish I can let you feel the sweet feelings you get when you hear sincere comments like “wow, you got a great voice!” from people around – but you’ll have to try it for yourself, put in the work, and see. (:

Remember that learning how to use your voice is like learning any musical instrument – and it’s not instant. So while you WILL see tremendous results very fast, these 60 days are not the end of your journey – but only the beginning.

It was really hard to find anything bad to say about the course. If you want to learn how to sing – by all means you’ve found what you’re looking for. Thanks to technology that’s making stuff so affordable and accessible in our times.

Still, because the course is an online course after all, and not a personal singing teacher – that can correct your mistakes and give specific feedback – it can serve as an outstanding first step in singing, but you have to be aware of the limitations of an online product on this topic. The bottom line is that I give Superior Singing Method the ranking of 4.5 stars.

I hope it’s been helpful – cheers.
